| McNally Resigns as IEC Chairman July 18, 2001 On July 11, 2001, Jack McNally resigned the office of Chairman of the IBEW International Executive Council. He had been appointed to that position on January 31, 2001 by International President Edwin D. Hill to succeed Clyde Bowden who had stepped down from that office. In resigning, Brother McNally cited his recent defeat as business manager of Local 1245, Walnut Grove, California. Local 1245 is the largest utility local in the IBEW representing approximately 19,000 workers primarily at Pacific Gas & Electric and outside construction and line clearance and tree trimming contractors. Though the IBEW Constitution does not require that the Chairman or members of the IEC be serving as local union business managers, Brother McNally said that his resignation would be in the best interests of the Brotherhood. President Hill accepted McNally's resignation with regret and praised the departing IEC Chairman for his many years of dedicated service to the IBEW. McNally has agreed to serve as a consultant to the International President on matters of deregulation, restructuring and organizing in the utility industry. McNally began his career as an apprentice lineman with Pacific Gas & Electric. He was initiated into Local 1245 in 1960. In 1968 he was appointed as a business representative in the local, became assistant business manager in 1976 and was elected business manager in 1980, a post he held for 21 years. McNally has a long record of activism in labor and community affairs. He served as chairman of the California Coalition of Utility Employees, a director of the California State Association of Electrical Workers, and as a vice president and executive committee member of the California Labor Federation, among many other positions. In December 2000, McNally was elected to a three-year term to the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco to represent non-banking interests in the district's nine western states.
