NEW NUCLEAR PLANTS, ALTERNATIVE ENERGY
POSITIVE NOTE IN PRESIDENT’S SPEECH, IBEW SAYS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The following statement by IBEW International President Edwin D. Hill is in response to President Bush’s State of the Union address Tuesday Night:

“Apparently it took $68-a-barrel oil and the Exxon-Mobil’s announcement of the highest profit in the history of U.S. corporations to make President Bush see which way the wind is blowing on energy, but American working families are certainly relieved that the shift may be on to alternative energy sources, and particularly nuclear energy.

“The IBEW has been actively promoting nuclear, wind, solar and clean-coal technologies, working in partnership with utility companies and energy contractors to help move our nation toward renewable energy. For too long, the prospects for innovation in energy technologies have been given short shrift.

“For the sake of American consumers, we hope President Bush stays true to his word in investing in nuclear and renewable technologies, the cleanest and most efficient means to ensure safe and reliable energy in the future. We look forward to working with the administration, members of Congress and the industry to help advance these technologies.”

The IBEW has approximately 750,000 members in the United States and Canada, including 220,000 in all sectors of the energy industry.
