The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers joins the growing number of labor unions, community and civil rights activists and lawmakers in calling for an end to Kellogg Co.’s four-month lockout of more than 220 workers at the company’s Memphis, Tenn., plant.

“Kellogg’s action is causing pain, not only to the workers affected, but to working families throughout Memphis,” said International President Edwin D. Hill. “It’s time for management to sit down and come to an agreement that will get employees back to work, while upholding middle class pay and good jobs.”

On Oct. 22, workers were locked out after members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM) rejected Kellogg’s demand for the introduction of casual, part-time workers with lower pay and benefits, with the eventual phasing out of all regular, full-time positions.

The plant produces Frosted Flakes, Fruit Loops and numerous other Kellogg’s cereals.

“The Memphis workers and their union are battling for the future of the next generation of Kellogg's workers and for the defense of negotiated standards against the expansion of disposable jobs,” said a petition by global union federation the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers' Associations.

Numerous organizations have added their voice, urging the company to end the lockout, including the NFL Players Association and the Congressional Black Caucus.
