May 2005 IBEW Journal RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 41, BUFFALO, NY—The club took a bus tour to Rochester in December. The itinerary included the Strong Museum, dinner and the Geva Theater for a performance of "A Christmas Carol." Kudos to Al and Sis Meyers for arranging the trip. As of Jan. 1, 2005, Pres. Al Meyers and Vice Pres. Jerry Klier resigned from office—Al after 11 years and Jerry after seven years. The membership thanks both for their service and dedication. Both men plan to remain active in the club and Al will still run trips for interested members. The new lineup of officers is as follows: Pres. Frank Mahoney, Vice Pres. Tom Feger, Sec. Dennis Bauer, Treas. Marty Ryan and Sgt. At Arms John Drew. The Executive Board includes Chmn. Ralph Walters, Milt Pfieffer, Norm Beyer, Dick nelson, Kenny Meyers and Mike Keller. Now that George Bush has been reelected, we must stay active through our pro-working people representatives and senators to stave off his agenda. Tom Feger, P.S.
RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 103, BOSTON, MA—Exec. Board member Al Gricus, who was a volunteer at last year’s National Democratic Convention in Boston, is on the warpath again this year—working along with friends of labor, such as Sen. Edward Kennedy and Sen. John Kerry, in an effort to stop G.W. Bush from dismantling Social Security. Al keeps in shape by walking up and down the stairs of the 60-story Prudential Tower for charitable organizations. We are saddened by the death of 60-year member Bob Regan, our former apprenticeship-training director and son of our revered former Int. Vice Pres. John J. Regan. On a brighter note the club kicked off the new year with a wonderful turnout on St. Patrick’s Day for a N.E. Boiled Dinner. Trips to Montreal and Toronto attracted the largest spring attention. We wonder if it’s for those casinos, or the inexpensive cost of prescription drugs? Also on the retirees’ wish list. Will it take a plague of epidemic proportions before Congress enacts national health care for everyone? Imagine the world’s wealthiest drug cartels not having flue vaccine. RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 134, CHICAGO, IL—The new year started with a few big bumps—the war, the election, a work slowdown and gas prices spiraling. Our troops are doing a fine job in Iraq. I hope they bring them home soon. At press time we were preparing for an election for our Executive Board members and a treasurer. Our December corned beef dinner was great and fun for all. We had a full house. A big thank-you to Bro Burt Van Wetering for taking pictures at our functions. We also visited our Apprentice Training Facility. We were all very impressed. Congratulations on a job well done by Mr. John Donahue and his staff. It was quite a difference from when we went to Washburne Trade School. Our club is doing well. We have a bus tour to Branson, MO, a play to Drury Lane and many guest speakers. We had the Electrical Insurance Trustees come and explain the changes in our hospital and prescription changes. RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 177, JACKSONVILLE, FL—Many Local 177 union members have excelled in interesting and varied careers. Bro. Bill Binckley was 14 years old when he played in the movie Huckleberry Finn. He was also affectionately called "Mr. Apprenticeship" and he served on the Florida Industrial Commission in 1958. In 1957, Brother Andy Hill returned to Local 177 after 11 years serving in the IBEW International Office as a representative from this district. Among others, H.E. Buck Autry and I joined the local in 1950. Buck retired as president of Miller Electric Company. 1951 saw Bro. C.D. Smith appointed to the Labor Management Committee for Defense Manpower for Region VII. Bro. R. Michael Williams was business manager from 1990-1999, then was elected as president of the Florida State Building Trades. And now, Bro. Eddie L. Dedmon, our current Business Manager, has been appointed by Int. Pres. Edwin D. Hill as an IBEW International Representative assigned to the Fifth District, which includes Jacksonville. A lot of union talent is still available at IBEW Local 177. Fred Cancilla, P.S. RETIREES CLUB OF L.U. 291, BOISE, ID—The February Retirees Club meeting was held at the Kopper Kitchen on Thursday, Feb. 10. Attending for the local union was Larry Wearin, assistant business manager. Alice Fisher won the door prize. The March meeting was held March 10 at 1 p.m. at the Sunrise Café in Middleton. Representing the local were Bus. Mgr. Marc Bernsen and Dawn Walsh, office secretary. Pres. Don Harness spoke to the group about insurance. Bus. Mgr. Marc Bernsen discussed health care issues and the efforts to repeal "right-to-work." Attendance was good—35 plus. Stan Brassfield won the door prize. At the time of this writing we were scheduled to meet on April 14 at the Great Wall Restaurant at 1 p.m. at Five Mile and Overland. Lloyd Williams, P.S. |
