JATC Completion Banquet

Local 915 JATC graduate
Steve Kira, who received
the 5th year Outstanding
Apprentice Award, accepts
congratulations from his
father, retired former local
union president Bill Kira.

L.U. 915 (i&mt), TAMPA, FLOur annual JATC banquet and completion ceremony held in September 2004 was chaired by John Cook of Electro-Design Inc. John did an excellent job on short notice, especially since Hurricane Jeanne was knocking at our door! We had 30 apprentices graduating to inside journeyman wireman and three graduating to residential wireman. Six apprentices had perfect attendance for their entire apprenticeship: Steve Kira, Jerry Mack, Greatlen Bozeman, Lee Coleman, Donald Polley and Paul Strong! They all received a plaque of recognition and $50.

Awards were presented to the "outstanding apprentice" for each class year: Karen Hill, 1st year apprentice; Matthew Lyon, 2nd year; Michael Farris, 3rd year; and Phillip Swinson, 4th year.

The 5th year outstanding apprentice was Steve Kira. Steve received a plaque and $500 from the JATC, $150 from PowerNet Credit Union, and a set of tools donated by Klein Tool Company. Steves father is former local union president Bill Kira, a retired member.

This years Brad Felker Memorial Award for leadership, volunteerism, service and academic achievement went to Theresa King, who maintained a GPA of 92.8 throughout her apprenticeship!

Promote Solidarity

Local 965 members participate in steward
training.

L.U. 965 (em,govt&u), MADISON, WIOn Oct. 30, 2004, 40 members of Local 965 attended steward training at the Madison, WI, Labor Temple, conducted by Prof. Corliss Olson of the University of Wisconsin School for Workers. Prof. Olsens presentation was well received and included group activities to work on sample problems. The training received will be put to good use throughout the locals territory. Many thanks to Prof. Olson and our officers for arranging and presenting the valuable training.

The election is over. While the efforts of this local to assist John Kerry in garnering all of Wisconsins Electoral College votes were successful, the election ultimately went to his opponent. In light of this result, the focus of the local must be to promote solidarity and resist this administrations stated goal to remove regulations. This focus will be on protecting those regulations that support the jobs, benefits and working conditions of our members, and all working families, from attack by the anti-union forces that have taken over this administration and the Congress.

We remember the families of our brothers and sisters serving in harms way overseas. For all who have gone before, we must prevail.

Locals GOTV Effort

L.U. 983 (em), HUNTINGTON, INOn Election Day 2004, you didnt find IBEW Local 983 sitting on the sidelines. Answering the call of Int. Pres. Edwin D. Hill and the AFL-CIO, Local 983 coordinated a group of members to go to Ohio to assist with John Kerrys campaign. Members of this venture included Local 983 Bus. Mgr. Tyler Brown, Political Dir. Jody Mauller, Vice Pres. Kevin Hutchison and E-Board Chair Rouie Hawkins. They worked collaboratively with ACT and other local unions in this GOTV effort. Although the overall objective wasnt accomplished in Ohio, you can rest assured that the Buckeye state heard the voice of labor loud and clear on election day!

In other news for Local 983, Political Dir. Jody Mauller continues to work with Bus. Mgr. Brown to increase the number of members signed up for COPE. In our first year actively participating in the COPE program, Local 983 members contributed nearly $2,000 in donations (not bad, for a small manufacturing local). Local 983 understands the importance, especially now, of developing a strong COPE fund to insure election of labor friendly politicians. We will continue to work diligently to increase contributions throughout the new year.

Year in Review

Employees of Waste Recycling Solutions with Local
1049 Asst. Bus. Mgr. Everett Lewis.

L.U. 1049 (lctt,o&u), LONG ISLAND, NY2004 was a busy, fruitful year for our local. In February we concluded contract negotiations with Keyspan Corp. The Main Committee, under the leadership of Bus. Mgr. Ralph Ranghelli, brought back a four-year contract, which members overwhelmingly ratified. The memberhips solidarity played a major role in the success of negotiations.

Our Line Clearance Tree Trim Division began the year with some layoffs but ended with full employment. Our Electric and Gas Craft divisions finished the year with 100 percent employment. We await budget allocations for 2005 projects from LIPA and Keyspan.

The Organizing Committee organized Waste Recycling Solutions, and we await election dates on the Cablevision campaign and the NYPA Flynn Power Plant. The Governmental Affairs Committee brought our membership to a 90 percent voter registration rate, and 99 percent of local-endorsed candidates won their races.

Keyspan is pursuing a Business Transformation Initiative and we are examining it closely. We are talking with LIPA and Keyspan regarding the self-examination process LIPA has undertaken. We will remain involved in the process on behalf of our members interests.

We look forward to another year of opportunity and change. Working together we can continue our progress.
