Johnson Controls Moves To Mexico
167 IBEW Jobs Lost in Indiana
April 1, 2005
Members of IBEW Local 1109 at Goshen Indiana’s Johnson Controls plant will lose their jobs over the next several months as their employer moves operations to Reynosa, Mexico.
The workers, who produce parts for thermostats and building control systems, will see their jobs swept away by an outsourcing wave that has contributed to the loss of over 63,000 manufacturing jobs in Indiana since 2001.
Jeff Carter, International Representative for the Sixth District, praises Local 1109’s leaders for helping to negotiate a severance package that includes liberalized eligibility rules for pension benefits and retiree healthcare. Carter, however, says, "It is unfortunate that U.S. laws don’t protect workers whose companies relocate to other countries."
