Bargaining Concluded

Local 47, Diamond Bar, CA, members come to the rescue after
Santa Ana winds strafe Southern California.

L.U. 47 (lctt,mo,u&uow), DIAMOND BAR, CAIt is our sad duty to report that Bros. Fermin Mendoza and Douglas Perry recently passed away. Bro. Perry passed away after a long illness, and Bro. Mendoza sustained fatal injuries in a job site accident on the Edison Hydro system. Our sincere condolences to their families and friends. We will miss them.

Bargaining has concluded with Southern California Edison on a three-year extension of our agreement, with 10.25 percent spread over that period. There are increases in every other economic contractual feature. Additionally, line workers stand to get up to a 7 to 9 percent market adjustment for the inclusive classifications. We look for similar arrangements at some of our other employers as we progress. Skilled craftsmen and line hands are at a premium.

In California we have Democratic control in both houses of the state legislature. All statewide constitutional offices from the governor down are also in the hands of pro-labor Democrats. The California delegation in the U.S. Congress is also predominantly supportive of labor and our interests.

We would like to congratulate Ninth District Int. Rep. Charley Silvernale and his wife Mary Jane on their retirement. Good luck!

Contract Dispute

City, MO, posted in the St. Joseph, MO,
area.

L.U. 53 (lctt,o,rts&u), KANSAS CITY, MOGreetings Brothers and Sisters. At this writing, Local 53 is in negotiations with KMBC TV 9 and SE-MA-NO Co-Op. Both contracts expired on Dec. 31, 2002; however, we have agreement extension with both.

Local 53 is still involved in a contract dispute with KQTV Channel 2 in St. Joseph, MO. We are working under an implemented agreement. Check out the billboards posted in the St. Joseph, MO, area. President and Organizer Steve White recently used a salt program on a prevailing wage job that was awarded to one of our nonunion competitors.

Local 53 held a Christmas dinner for our retirees, and food and money were collected for the Harvesters Food Drive for the needy in our area. We also held Christmas dinners for our members at our regular union meetings on December 17th and 18th. We had a good turnout, and thank all who helped.

Bus. Rep. Bob Stuart reports that construction work is slow at this writing, and that the 15th annual Crappie Tournament will be held on May 17, 2003, at Truman State Park.

New Industrial Organizer

L.U. 77 (lctt,mt,o,t&u), SEATTLE, WAHappy New Year from the Northwest. Our work picture is a little slow although the "storm season" is finally upon us.

Quanta attempted to change the "rubber glove" standard by asking for a variance in Washington State. Local 77 responded to that challenge and prevailed.

In November, Ninth District Vice Pres. Mike Mowery told our unit conference in Spokane that the industry continues to be confronted with change and one of our challenges will be to re-organize the industry. To that end, we have added an industrial organizer to staff and are putting together programs to achieve that goal.

Transmission line construction is still on the back burner. We expect work to break out later this year. Our utilities continue to be in turmoil as they continue to try to release themselves from contracts that were entered into during the market manipulations of 2000. FERC continues to threaten the region with deregulation. Politics continue to play a bigger role in our work lives than we would like.

A Plan to Empower

L.U. 83 (u), BINGHAMTON, NYAfter the election of officers, we congratulate Bus. Mgr./Pres./Fin. Sec. Dan Addy, Vice Pres. Gary Bonker, Rec. Sec. Linda Lord, Treas. Dan Baschmann, Bus. Agent Tom Addy and Bus. Agent Don Tuttel. The Unit chairs are Gary Tiso (Brewster), Jennifer Geetter (Binghamton), John McDonald (Hornell), Jim Clines (Ithaca), Robert Clark (Liberty), Frank LaBombard (Plattsburgh) and Tom Bassage (Elmira).

The officers hope to "empower" the membership, therefore increasing member involvement in the local union. Along with serving the membership, Local 83 plans aggressive organizing campaigns throughout its territory.

Our sincere thanks to Bus. Mgr./Pres./F.S. Jack Humphrey for his many years of dedicated service to Local 83 and Local 1125. Health concerns kept Bro. Humphrey from seeking a second term.

Don S. Tuttel, B.A./P.S.

Nancy Masle Retires

From left, Local 97, Syracuse, NY, Bus.
Rep. Dan Wismont, retiring Asst. Bus. Rep.
Nancy Masle and Bus. Rep. Mike Freed
at a luncheon in Sister Masles honor.

L.U. 97 (u), SYRACUSE, NYWe voted on several Bylaws changes in October and November and all were approved by the membership. This is a testament to the good job performed by our Bylaws Committee. Vice Pres. Martin Currier chaired the committee and David Janusz was appointed Judge for the vote. The changes have been approved by the I.O.

Asst. Bus. Mgr. Nancy Masle (Eastern Div.) has announced her pending retirement. The January union meeting will be the last meeting she attends as an active member. She held several positions in Local 1371, including vice president and president until we amalgamated and became Local 97, at which time she was appointed a business representative and later appointed assistant business manager.

Asst. Bus. Mgr. Masles dedication to the union and countless hours and effort spent on behalf of the membership was above and beyond the call of duty. She was a wealth of information and was willing to share her knowledge with any interested union member.

Nancy, on behalf of Bus. Mgr./ Pres./Fin. Sec. Thomas Primero, the staff and many members of Local 97 who appreciate your years of service, we thank you and wish you a long and healthy retirement.

Dan Wismont, P.S.
