Training for the Future October 2002 IBEW Journal NJATC Rolls Out New Computer-Based Training Courses Success in providing union members technology training for the future is a hallmark of the IBEW-NECA National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC). The NJATC recently rolled out three new computer-based training (CBT) coursesavailable to local JATCs, IBEW members and NECA contractors. "These computer-based courses are designed to supplement training for specific aspects of the electrical and telecommunications fields serviced by apprentices, journeymen and technicians," said IBEW International President Edwin D. Hill, who serves as NJATC co-chairman and trustee. CBT courses now available are Direct Current (DC) Theory, Mathematics for the Electrical Trades, and Digital Electronics. "Three additional coursesSemiconductor Electronics, AC Theory and Instrumentation will be available this fall," said A.J. Pearson, NJATC executive director. "As additional CBT courses become available, NJATC bulletins will announce release dates." Students will appreciate the flexibility and convenience of the self-paced format and can complete course work from any location with necessary computer access, whether at home, a library or computer lab. Step-by-step interactive training provides students a complete tutorial of the subject matter. "Of particular interest are the CBT interactive labs," notes the NJATC. "These computer simulated labs are based on the real hands-on lab exercises designed around NJATCs training equipment. Using life-like test equipment and hardware components, the student performs all the steps of a hands-on lab." Local JATCs will provide support and assistance with course material at the students request. The two-component CBT courses utilize a CD containing the subject matter, coupled with a student disk. Work stored on the student disk can be taken to a participating JATC for review or sent directly to the NJATC for evaluation. The final evaluation may be supplemented by a proctored test administered by the JATC. While the CDs can be used over and over, from student to student, a new student disk will be required for each student. The cost of the CBTs is $99 for the CD and $10 for each student disk. Please check with your local JATC for ordering information. |
