10 IBEW Family Members Win Union Plus Scholarships

Members of IBEW families turned in their usual fine showing with 10 scholarships among the 115 awarded by the Union Plus credit card program to union members and their families.

In dollar terms, tops among the 2001 Scholarship winners from IBEW is Rhasheema Sweeting, daughter of IBEW member Joseph Sweeting of Local 617, San Mateo, California. She will receive $1,500 and attend either Howard University in Washington, D.C., or Princeton, in Princeton, New Jersey.

Six IBEW winners will receive $1,000, with $500 going to the other three.

Included among the IBEW winners are twins, Daniel and David Strouhal, sons of Dennis Stone of IBEW Local 48, Portland, Oregon, who will each receive $1,000.

Daniel and David Strouhal are separating for college, with Daniel enrolling at Claremont McKenna College in California and David headed to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona.

In addition to the Strouhal twins, IBEW winners of $1,000 scholarships are:

Brianna Bladen, Local 796, Dothan, Alabama, daughter of John Bladen. She is headed for the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Amanda Craig-Newquist, Local 47, Diamond Bar, California, daughter of Mark Newquist. She plans to attend Azusa Pacifica University in Azusa, California.

Nichole Ehnes, Local 73, Spokane, Washington, daughter of John Ehnes, and an incoming student at the Unversity of Puget Sound.

Sara Malcolm, Local 77, Seattle, Washington, daughter of Guy Malcolm. She plans to attend the University of Washington.

The $500 winners from IBEW families are:

Veronica Garsee, Local 479, Beaumont, Texas, daughter of John Garsee. She plans to enroll in Texas A&M in Bryan, Texas.

Tamara Redden, Local 2155, Bonham, Texas, daughter of Marie and Bobby Danner. She plans on a nursing career and will attend Grayson County College.

Lori Reynolds, Local 1759, Casper, Wyoming, daughter of Robert Reynolds. She recently completed her freshman year at Morgan Community College and plans to attend Northeastern Junior College.

The Union Plus scholarships program began in 1992 and is open to members, spouses and children of members of unions participating in the Union Privilege credit card program. In addition to demonstrating academic ability, applicants must be accepted to an accredited school and write a 500-word essay on their career goals, their relationship with the labor movement and why they should win.

Applications for the 2002 awards will be available in September of this year. Applications can be downloaded from www.unionprivilege.org or obtained by sending a postcard with name, address, telephone number and union affiliation to Union Plus Scholarship Program, P.O. Box 34800, Washington, D.C. 20043-4800. The deadline is January 31, 2002.
